Andy vents to Jack how Robert is using Debbie and Sarah to get to him and goes on to say how the two are together. To avoid another ‘public fight,’ Jack goes to see Robert at the garage. From his conversation with Robert, Jack isn’t even sure what to think of his disowned son, he’s unrecognizable to him. Back at the farm, the judgmental duo can’t understand what Robert’s motives are for all his lying and actions (they really are clueless aren’t they?). Jack just wants Robert gone from the village.

Randomly wondering why Emmerdale hasn't brought in any long lost Sugdens; real, adjacent (Merricks!) or retconned, in these last 10ish years or so, besides Robert. And I'm not even talking long-term, just at all!

Let's see.

When Robert arrived back, he was tacked-on to a family he was only related to by marriage-to-be, the Whites. They were wealthy, powerful and had a three generation dynamic he wasn't a part of, as Lachlan wasn't his child (we got to meet Donny later). Of course Rebecca completed the White line-up.

Making Robert a dad was super important to TPTB, but even then, Robert lost Seb to Liverpool long before Ryan Hawley gave his leaving notice.

In contrast we have the Dingles and the Dingle add-ons. Here is what I could think of right now; A secret daughter for Marlon in April, Kyle came back to live in the village, they brought in Aaron's sister Liv, then we had Faith re-cast, Mandy came back + Vinny, brand new secret sons - Ryan for Charity (and his son Oscar on top of that!) and Nate for Cain, and finally Caleb, his wife Ruby and their son Nicky.

Not to mention the people who have married and/or had kids with Dingles.

They brought in several Bartons, relatives by marriage to Moira, but blood relatives to her children; James, Ross, Pete and Finn + Emma, then a return from Holly, Matty and finally a brother for Moira; Mackenzie.

Tates: they started with Joe (and Graham who was very entangled with the whole family) followed by Kim, then Jamie, Andrea and Millie (and Millie's maternal granny), and also Caleb and his family who are both Dingle and Tate adjacent.

The Anderson family was extended with daughter Naomi, mother Claudette and father Victor, and we even got to meet the mum/ex-wife.

We got two new Sharmas in Amit and Suni, plus the return of Archie, a couple of extra King kids in Elliot and Carl + nephew Tom, Meena was Manpreet's sister, Chloe was Kerry's secret daughter and Amy's sister, and Paddy got a brand new dad in Bear. Vanessa and Tracy were made sisters and got a joint dad in Frank. Rhona's mother Mary came and stayed, and then there was Gus and a new biological baby with no cheating story!

Heck, we were even subjected to Wendy's creepy ex-husband, Russ, making the total Posner count four characters + they made one of them "father" to Harry!

Both Jack and Joe Sugden were away from the village plenty, as was Robert. They could have gotten up to all sorts. Andy had a whole other birth family, but they all disappeared. Robert has two half siblings in Sandie and Tommy (he is something of a mystery), and they are bound to have families of their own. And what about Sarah Sr, couldn't she have a relative or two out there in the world, who would be blood relatatives to Victoria and Harry? Kathy was very much a part of the Sugden family, she had at least one kid in Australia we've only ever heard of.

I don't know if the show doesn't 'dare' mess around with the Sugdens and feel they are a bit 'untouchable' or if they just plain and simple aren't at all interested in them? (Actually I can guess.) But I still think it's weird and the Dingles should never have taken over the whole village like this.

That turned into quite a long post, if anyone made it to the end of it, sorry! 🙈

My brain is pretty fried after this, let me know if I missed/left out anything important!

I haven’t been paying much attention to recent Emmerdale but has anyone else thrown around the idea that John met Robert in prison and that’s why things are repeating like the broken down van and the barn. Like maybe he isn’t even a Sugden but knows all this info cause he was talking to Robert inside including how him and Aaron got together.

well there are theories that he's a conman (he had dog tags with the name Aiden Moore on them) or Eric's son (because his mother is apparently an "old friend" of Eric's) or Joe Sugden's son (apparently the Barbara who actually appeared on the show dated Joe?)

But I like your theory too! it would work with the conman theory too. Rob might have told him Aaron owned the house and the scrapyard and that his family own half the village and fauxbert got pound signs in his eyes and decided to *become* Robert.

When is the ssw for emmerdale. I

know Ian used to give out spoilers like crazy noe he is back do we know the what the theme is about.

Danny coming back after the team was so done with them during the covid era makes ZERO sense but he also has a kid and I can't even blame him for wanting an stable job. Even if is this. He has not control over any of this after all.

But the fucking use of "a prodigal son" over that guy makes me so mad.

The next thing is that every single Dingle will adore him and have xmas eith him as if Robert is not the reason Aaron is still alive.

I hate it so much. Is like the open the wounds that we all have and people are more than ever asking about why ROBERT is not back instead of this.

It does feel like John is reboot-Robert minus everything special Ryan added to the character plus the great writing he got back then (thanks Maxine).

As for this year's super soap week, I don't think anything has been announced yet. The only thing that is known so far is that a major portion of the cast has filmed scenes concerning a big barn fire a few weeks ago (apparently John saves Moira and Ruby's lives, i dont remember more than that, only that Charity, Cain and Chas will be there too, which fits in with what you said about John being welcomed by the Dingles later on lol).

The thing is, I'm not sure whether the filming dates of the barn fire will match with ssw or if the barn fire will be a prelude to whatever happens then? It was also announced that Nate's actor will leave the show, so some people suspect he will die in those ssw eps, and there's also talk of something big happening with belle&tom, though according to the latest interview with one of the producers, their coercive control story will run until the end of the year.

I'm still looking forward to whatever comes, mainly bc John's actor said there were many twists and turns to come and every news piece leading up to his arrival mentioned a return of the Sugdens, so I believe John's appearance is only the start. Maybe Diane will return, maybe some Sugden-adjacent characters like the Merricks, or even Kathy Glover like some rumours suggested.

I've read a few theories recently about how John isn't actually Jack's son but rather the son of Jack's brother Joe, since Joe was romantically linked to John's alleged mother Barbara and also Karen Moore (who was also Jack's girlfriend for a time) which might explain the Aiden Moore dogtags.

Tbh, if John's character wasn't so dull and his romance with Aaron so contrived, I think we would all be having a wonderful time right now. Unfortunately, we gotta work with what we have. Plus the absence of hermit Hawley 😔🙄

If one of those returning faces isn’t Robert then you’re not doing it right! We don’t need ANOTHER Sugden, what we need is for you to get one of them back.

I’m trying to figure out who he might be but afaik (and I know they can retcon whatever they want) Joe didn’t have any children and neither did Jack’s sister whose name escapes me. So I guess they’re going to invent a new branch of the family or give Saint Jack another son.

Unless I’ve missed any spoilers about it already.

Maybe they’ve aged Seb up miraculously. I wouldn’t put it past them.

I hope one day they give Jack Sugden Jr a storyline, whether it's one where he resents Debbie for whatever reason (maybe she has yet another new partner that he knows if he bonds with, they'll leave eventually)

Surely he's got some trauma from being pushed aside after he saved Sarah or from all the constant rotation of step-dad after step-dad, there was Pete, Ross, Joe, Al and whoever Debbie could be with now

He hasn't seen his family in years and he could act out due to him missing Cain and Charity (running away etc)

He could have a storyline where he learns of what his parents did back when they were younger (andy abusing Jo, Debbie helping to cover up Cameron's murders and the murder of Shane) and see his parents in a different way

Just bring him back, as he's got a new uncle after all and the boy is 12 soon surely they should be celebrating that or it should be mentioned by Charity like "Oh this is for Jack, he's twelve and I'm going to see him."

I'm interested to know how/why John came to have the Sugden name and where he grew up. From what I gather from the Emmerdale wiki, his mother was a teacher in Hotten who had a very short fling with Jack in early 1988.

I'm also interested to know if Jack knew about John and if they ever met. Before his death, Jack spent a year away from the village in Spain with Annie, could they have met then?

If they never met and if Jack didn't even know about him, why would he have the last name Sugden? Did John change his name later in life? Or was he actually brought up with the Sugden name? They must've left Hotten in that case, or the siblings would have met in school?

I still think a long lost son of Joe's had made much more sense to bring in. A cousin for Victoria would had been lovely, and Joe was a huge part of the show, but 'childless'.

But, It feels like they really want him to be Robert's brother for a reason, and that reason clearly starts with an A and ends with aron. A cousin of Robert's for Aaron to date would have been slightly less controversial. Slightly. Now, is it because they think it's hot or interesting (picture the gif of Ryan Hawley saying 'taboo' here) that Aaron would fall for his ex-husband's brother or is it because they are wanting to set up a new brotherly rivalry? Because it's very hard to do that with just one brother, just saying 😇

i dunno... i really wish that john was rob/vic/andys straight cousin instead.

i'm gay so i feel kinda bad about that tho, like we need more rep on screen......but just not this character.

feels like theres more they could do if he wasnt gay, better suited than going him up with aaron........and to me it would feel more natural if he was joe sugdens son instead of jacks.

guess we will have to see how it goes......

Like we all went from "ooohh a new Sugden!!!" to "oh he's gay... they'll shove him at Aaron then" - and here we are.

and we all predicted Vic would latch onto him in .02 seconds and forget anyone else ever existed - and she did

and then came the van spoilers and we were all like "oh he's going to break down at the layby then and aaron will suddenly be the only person in the country with the skills to fix it " - and then we got that layby hook up

the whole thing is just... trying too hard to be robron and failing every step of the way.

He had to be Jack's son, he had to be Robert's half - brother, he had to be gay, and since the only other gay man in the village is Arthur and he's like 14... it's not rocket science to figure out who he's meant as a love interest for.

And it's like a little kid shoving two barbie dolls together to make them "kiss" and then decide they're in love and getting married.
